Sunset at the Concert Hall

Sunset at the Concert Hall by V-Light
Thessaloniki Concert Hall | 20.10.2013

I remember when i first saw this building, i wasn’t very impressed. I even thought it looked kinda ugly and maybe too modern for this city but one afternoon i discovered all its brilliance. I’m no architect so perhaps i’m not able to appreciate all the aspects of it, so when i was hearing about the Japanese architect (Arata Isozaki) who designed it and how innovative it was and blah blah…I must admit i was like “that’s all crap”…But now i see it. The way it was designed and placed near the waterfront was all intentional. With its glass exterior it manages to merge with the surrounding landscape. It looks like you can see right through it but the continuation of the sea and the horizon is only a reflection…If that’s not genius i don’t know what is!

  1. Very good shot – I think you have the disadvantage of seeing the building in context with what is around it – just having this shot to go on, I like the building’s lines and flow. I know buildings should fit their environment, but until then, nice!

    1. The area is very open, it’s not in the heart of the city, so there is only one building next to it and it’s actually the main concert hall building which looks totally different as it’s all covered with a brick wall..So the contrast between the two is really huge. Also in general we don’t have glass buildings in Thessaloniki. I’ll look if i have any photos were you can see both of them…or else until my next visit in city 🙂

    1. I do like it more than the main building too 🙂 It was just that when they were building that thing if you looked at it from its other side, it looked like a concrete mass with no windows at all and it looked really horrible. I was wondering what the hell was that thing supposed to be. When i saw it finished and had the chance to go inside and look at it from the other side too, i really liked it 🙂 The main building looks so heavy and old compared to this…
