Timelapse: Thessaloniki Sunsets

Hello my friends! πŸ˜€

Β  I’ve been feeling extra creative the last few days so i decided to gather some rather old footage and make a timelapse with it. It’s mostly an experiment with tracking and panning within Sony Vegas Pro…I think it can create an interesting result. I will be working on my extra epic sky timelapse now…It takes forever because iΒ  must remove the birds, frame by frame or else you’d be seeing black dots all over the place. Being a perfectionist, i can’t live with that πŸ˜›

Β  Let me know what you think of this timelapse. Any comments are welcome. The quality was greatly degraded because of YouTube, maybe i didn’t choose the best export settings but oh well πŸ™‚

  1. Super work, Alex! Love me a bit of time-lapse with tracking, sliding and panning. Nicely done.
I’ve always wanted to experiment with time-lapse myself but can’t really justify the expense of an intervalometer. Watching this has just rekindled my interest again! D’oh!

    1. Thank you Distan! πŸ˜€ Timelapses are very cool indeed! I think i learned a lot from editing this, so i can make a better one next time πŸ™‚ About the intervalometer, if you have a Canon camera you can get away with it by using Magic Lantern, it’s a modified firmware. I never had an intervalometer, Magic Lantern works like a charm πŸ™‚

        1. Should work for both! πŸ™‚ It will change your life! It has amazing capabilities, especially for video and timelapse. It can take photos multiple photos for HDR, it can be triggered by a sound or movement, it has a ton of focusing tools, especially helpful when using manual lenses… Can’t recommend it enough! Just read the instructions carefully on how to install it, it’s quite easy but you need to be a bit careful πŸ™‚

          1. Thanks so much for the advice, Alex. Really appreciated. I confess, rather shamefully, to have never updated the firmware on any of cameras since buying them. You’ve really piqued my interest now. You’re a gem.

            1. πŸ˜€ My pleasure! Well no need to worry, it’s rather safe cause it doesn’t override the official firmware, it just runs along with it from your memory card. You might need to update your official firmware though, you should find all the info on their website, they have a very detailed guide on how to do it. If you need any help let me know πŸ™‚

    1. πŸ˜€ Whenever you have time..Maybe i’m too analytical but having seen so many great-quality timelapses i’m not very impressed with how it ended up looking online. It’s a lot better on my computer. I did it mostly for fun and to get out of the rut of not having posted any videos for quite a while, even though i have a ton of material.

    1. πŸ˜€ I’m glad you like it! Timelapses are fun to make but they do require a lot of work. It kinda sucks to upload it only to see that the quality got totally messed up…I’ll need to investigate what i did wrong so it won’t happen on my next one πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you πŸ˜€ I will surely make more videos! I find it to be a lot of fun! Still need to learn many things about video though but i like a challenge πŸ˜‰

  2. Had a chance to view full screen – i really enjoyed the work – the quality may be better, but as is – I don’t think the spirit of the work was compromised at all.

    1. Good to hear that! πŸ™‚ I have the tendency to over-analyze everything so if i see even a little pixel doing something weird, i can re-edit the whole thing again and again. Because of that i haven’t uploaded half of the stuff i’ve been working on and i do realize it’s stupid, so i’m making some little moves to post stuff that i might not be happy with…Since it’s mostly older stuff, i want to get them out of the way so i can start totally fresh in Austria πŸ˜€

    1. Thank you Lia πŸ™‚ The sunsets in Thessaloniki, were my favorite thing while i was living there! I always arranged my afternoon walk at the right time to see the sunset. I wish i had more material but i rarely carried a tripod with me so i could not take a proper timelapse 😦
